Three Trends Driving the Uptick in Vintage Jewellery Sales
There is a definite surge in business for antique retailers like Cynthia Findlay Antiques. They are finding themselves selling more custom jewellery from Toronto, as well as unique vintage pieces and certified jewellery.
TV and Film
There are a few elements driving the increased sale of vintage engagement rings. Pop culture is a major one, the film and television we watch seems to reflect a more vintage style. Period pieces have become popular, meaning there are lots of fancy outfits on display to fawn over. Television has been especially instrumental in bringing back the vintage look. Engagement rings from the early 1900s have shown up in shows such as the Great Gatsby and Downton Abbey, while shows like Hannibal have helped to popularize other vintage pieces (like dining sets).
Unique Pieces
Another element is the one-of-a-kind nature of each piece. Estate jewellery was typically produced during a period prior to mass manufacturing, and even then may be one of only a number of surviving pieces from that production. You might notice hallmarks on pieces that will clue you into who produced it. These pieces aren’t duplicated, so you won’t find someone else wearing your engagement ring.
Long Term Value
Another important reason is long term, and sometimes sentimental value. Not all pieces come from a retailer, some are passed down through family members through wills or through hand me downs at special events. Some of these rings will have a great deal of value, and should have an appraisal done to verify their worth. In these situations, it’s always best to have them insured. You don’t want to take the chance of losing such an expensive piece even if the circumstances are outside your control.
